Woodworking & Construction

An introductory and hands on course for participants to learn about working with wood.

Current courses covers using hand tools, varnishing, gluing and screwing timber.

Participants will choose a small project to work on, that they then take home.

Current woodworking classes run at our Community Shed next to our Community Garden and also next to part of our King Street centre.

WOODWORK & CONSTRUCTION LEVEL 1
This is a pre-accredited literacy and numeracy module that is contextualised to the needs of building and construction industries and has been developed as a part of the Industry Contextualised Pre-Accredited Literacy and Numeracy Program. It targets people who require development in their literacy and numeracy skills, so they can either access opportunities in these growing industries and/or undertake vocational training at Certificate II or a pathway into other pre-accredited or accredited foundation skills modules.

The Building and Construction Workplace

  • Getting to know the workplace
  • Asking for help when you need it
  • Getting to know new workmates
  • Increasing your awareness of workplace diversity
  • Understanding different job roles and responsibilities
  • Understanding the purpose of a toolbox meeting



Teamwork and Communication

  • Following and giving instructions
  • Understanding different types of jobs and duties
  • Showing teamwork and flexibility in the workplace

Occupational Health and Safety

  • Duty of Care (caring for yourself and others)
  • Being aware of your employer's responsibilities
  • Hazards and risks (including communicating hazards and risks to others)
  • OH&S rights and responsibilities
  • Personal Protective Equipment
  • Ensuring safety in the workplace
  • Basic first aid
  • Manual handling
  • Reporting incidents and accidents

Prepare for an Onsite Induction (White Card)

  • Understanding what the White Card is about
  • Practising navigational skills for an online test
  • Learning about other certificates and licences

LITERACY & NUMERACY FOR BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION - LEVEL 1

L&N for Building and Construction Level 1 is designed to support learners wishing to pathway into accredited building and construction programs.

The program supports learners to gain vocationally contextualised foundation skills through practical and applied learning activities. Each module provides opportunities for learners to participate in individual, small group, or whole class activities, helping them to build confidence and develop their skills.

WOODWORK & CONSTRUCTION

Learn, design, build and carve!

Our friendly teachers will teach you all you need to know to create wooden decorations, utensils, small furniture and even computerised wood carving projects.

Learn safety and use of woodworking tools all while completing projects of your own.

Our Community Shed will provide you all the tools you will need!

We have a variety of classes available, including Women's Woodwork and CNC Woodcarving.
